In an effort to serve members in the Newcastle area, the North East Branch held the Keating Construction Law Update in November 2016, hosted by Northumbria University. Sarah Williams of Keating Chambers was the guest speaker, and the event was very well attended despite the torrential rain on the evening.  Sarah elected to avoid the cases that have already been commented upon by many others and instead concentrated on some very interesting cases involving Part 36 offers and limitation of liability.  Continue reading

Spring Debate: Will BIM Reduce Construction Disputes?

chartered-arbitrators-northeast-spring-debate-2016As part of our annual “Spring Debate” the CIArb North East Branch considered the statement: “BIM will reduce construction disputes”.  The debate featured arguments from Andrew Croft of Beale & Co and Stephen Hargreaves of Griffiths & Armour arguing for, and Nicholas Baatz QC of Atkin Chambers arguing against.  Both sides were then encouraged to ask questions to the other, and the audience was invited to participate in an animated question and answer session. On 9th February 2016, the CIArb North East Branch was delighted to welcome Professor Rudi Klein to Leeds for what was an interesting and varied talk on some topical Construction subjects, such as: protecting Retention monies from insolvency (by putting them in trust accounts); Project Bank Accounts & fair payment; the Government’s review of the Construction Act; and Integrated Project Insurance.
